Yeosu City Launches 'Crime Prevention System' in Island Regions Starting August

Real-Time Video Transmission and Emergency Reporting via Personal Smartphones

Yeosu City in Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Kimyeong) announced on August 4 that it has established the nation's first crime prevention system to address blind spots in public safety in island regions. Starting in August, the system is being operated in island areas such as Nam-myeon, Hwajeong-myeon, and Samsan-myeon.

The newly introduced crime prevention system is designed to compensate for the unique conditions of island regions where installing CCTV is difficult. It enables individuals to use their smartphones as mobile CCTV devices in emergency situations. The system is linked in real time with the Yeosu City CCTV Integrated Control Center, allowing for a swift response when an incident occurs.

When users tap 'Send Video' on their smartphone screen, live footage from the scene is transmitted in real time to the control center. If they press the 'Emergency Report' button, they can share the situation on site through a real-time call with center staff, and, if necessary, the system can connect to relevant agencies such as the police or fire department. The system can be accessed by scanning the information QR codes on guide signs installed on island trails and trekking routes, or by making a phone call.

A city official stated, "Strengthening public safety and ensuring security are also important tasks for the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Island Expo." He added, "We expect that this system will play a groundbreaking role in creating a safer Yeosu, not only by preventing crime but also by widely disseminating information in disaster situations."
