Kim appeared at the special prosecutor's office at KT Gwanghwamun Building West in Jongno-gu at approximately 9:17 a.m. that day, in the status of a suspect.

Kim is a central figure in the nomination intervention allegations that arose during the 2022 by-elections and last year's general election. There are suspicions that former President Yoon Sukyeol and Kim's wife exerted influence to secure Kim's nomination in the June 1, 2022 parliamentary by-election, in return for receiving illegal poll results from political broker Myung Taegyun during the 2022 presidential election campaign.

A recording was also released in which former President Yoon, on May 9, 2022?the day before the People Power Party's by-election nomination announcement?told Myung, "Kim Youngsun worked hard from the primaries, so I asked you to help Kim Youngsun, but there is a lot of talk in the party. I will talk to Sanghyun (Rep. Yoon) again. He is the nomination committee chair."

Kim's wife is also suspected of having worked to have former prosecutor Kim Sangmin run in Kim's constituency, Uichang in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, during last April's general election. At the time, Myung, who supported Kim, claimed that Kim's wife said, "Support prosecutor Kim Sangmin so that he can win in Changwon Uichang. If you do, after the election, you will be given a ministerial post or the presidency of a public corporation."

Before appearing, Kim held a press conference at the building entrance, once again raising allegations of election fund embezzlement by Kang Hyekyung, his former accounting staff member, and urging the special prosecutor's team to investigate. Kang was the first whistleblower in the nomination intervention allegations.

The special prosecutor's team searched the residences and offices of Kim, Rep. Yoon, and former prosecutor Kim, and summoned Myung for questioning on July 31 and August 1 to ascertain the facts related to the suspicions.

Based on these findings, the special prosecutor's team is expected to summon Kim's wife as a suspect on August 6 to clarify the substance of the nomination intervention allegations.
