Ministry of Education to Provide Research Grants to 338 Humanities and Social Sciences Master's and Doctoral Students

Annual Support of 20 Million Won for 238 Doctoral Students
Support Extended to Master's Students This Year...
12 Million Won Annually for 100 Recipients

The government will select 338 graduate students in the humanities and social sciences master's and doctoral programs, who have been recommended by their academic advisors or others, to provide research encouragement grants. One hundred master's students will receive 12 million won per year, and 238 doctoral students will receive 20 million won per year.

On August 4, the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea announced the results of the "2025 Selection of New Recipients for Research Encouragement Grants for Humanities and Social Sciences Master's and Doctoral Students."

The "Research Encouragement Grant for Master's and Doctoral Students" is a government program that provides grants to graduate students in the humanities and social sciences so they can devote themselves to their studies and research. The program was established to strengthen the research foundation for the next generation of scholars and to ensure the sustainability of the academic research ecosystem.

This year, the "Research Encouragement Grant for Master's Students" was newly introduced. The purpose is to prevent academic discontinuation among graduate students in the humanities and social sciences and to create an environment conducive to research immersion by providing systematic support from the master's level.

The 100 selected master's students will each receive 12 million won per year.

For the "Research Encouragement Grant for Doctoral Students," which has been implemented since 2023, a total of 238 students were selected. Each of these students can receive up to 20 million won per year for a maximum of two years.

Graduate students selected as recipients of the research encouragement grant are required to actively communicate with their academic advisors and faithfully carry out their research. In addition, they must submit a final report detailing their research outcomes within six months after the end of the research period. The selection results are announced on the website of the National Research Foundation of Korea and can be checked through the Integrated Research Project Support System. The finalized projects will receive research encouragement grants starting in September, after the agreements are signed.

Choi Eunhee, Director of Talent Policy, said, "It is very meaningful that we have newly established the research encouragement grant for master's students to support the next generation of scholars who will lead the future of fundamental studies in the humanities and social sciences." She added, "We will continue to strengthen support so that talented individuals can conduct research and grow to their fullest potential without financial concerns."
