To provide equal language training opportunities for third-year students at Ulleung Middle School who did not participate in the US language program (TKAP), the county organized a group of 8 applicants out of 13 non-participating students for this program.
This training was designed to offer cultural experiences to students in Ulleung, where educational disparities arise due to the island's geographical characteristics, enabling them to directly experience local cultures. The program was structured to improve practical English conversation skills.
The students attended native English lectures at universities in Malaysia and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. With the faculty team from Handong Global University, they were taught not only through traditional lectures but also through diverse activities (Activity English) and daily English using AI, allowing them to acquire English naturally and enjoyably.
In addition to language learning, the students participated in field trips, spending one day each at a folk village and a sultan's palace in both Singapore and Malaysia, giving them opportunities to experience history, nature, and culture firsthand.
Handong Global University, through projects such as the K-U City Project and the Glocal University Project, has established the Handong Ulleung Campus in collaboration with Ulleung County. The university supports youth settlement in the region and leads innovation among the local community, universities, and businesses through the Ulleung Innovation Project, contributing to the sustainable development of new industries on Ulleungdo.
In particular, before departing for Singapore and Malaysia on July 28, an orientation and domestic English program were held at Handong Global University, offering students a chance to experience local lifestyles and daily English in advance. Campus experiences and mentoring by university students helped boost motivation and supported career planning.
County Governor Nam Hankwon stated, "I expect that this program will bring about positive changes not only for the personal growth of each student but also for the local community. I hope that students who have grown into global citizens by experiencing various cultures through the language training program with Handong Global University will become talents who continue to reside on Ulleungdo and contribute to its development. This will serve as an example of new possibilities for education in island regions."
