Old Pillows, Artificial Air Fresheners, and Worn-Out Mattresses
Can Cause Respiratory Diseases, Chronic Pain, and Other Health Issues
There has been a claim that the bedroom, which is supposed to be a space for daily relaxation, could actually harm your health.
The UK’s Daily Mail reported on July 31 (local time), citing a video posted on social media by American internist Dr. Saurabh Sethi, about “three items you should immediately remove from your bedroom.”
The dangerous bedroom items identified by Dr. Sethi are: ▲old pillows ▲artificial air fresheners ▲worn-out mattresses. He warned that these items can cause a variety of health problems, including respiratory diseases, hormonal disruption, and chronic pain.
The first item mentioned was old pillows. Dr. Sethi explained, “Over time, pillows accumulate dust mites, sweat, and various allergens,” and “exposure to mites can be a major cause of asthma.” He advised that if you have used a pillow for more than one to two years, you should consider replacing it.
The second item highlighted was artificial air fresheners, which are commonly used. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phthalates in air fresheners can be absorbed into the lungs, causing dizziness, headaches, and reduced concentration, and in the long term, can lead to serious problems such as cardiopulmonary diseases, cancer, and decreased reproductive function.
In fact, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), phthalates were detected in 86% of air fresheners. These substances are classified as potential hormone disruptors and asthma inducers. Dr. Sethi recommended, “It is safer to use natural essential oils or plant-based air fresheners instead of artificial fragrances.”
Finally, Dr. Sethi pointed out that mattresses older than seven years should be avoided. Worn-out mattresses can not only reduce sleep quality but also cause chronic back pain. He emphasized, “Regular replacement is necessary for your health.”
After the video was released, it went viral, recording over 2 million views. Many people responded by reflecting on their own habits, saying things like, “I’ve used my pillow for over 10 years,” and “I need to change my mattress right away.”
