Putin Continues Kyiv Bombings as Medvedev Mentions "Dead Hand"
Trump: "Unnecessary Sacrifices Must Stop"
Tensions between the United States and Russia over the war in Ukraine have escalated to an extreme level. The United States is pressuring Russia to end the war by imposing high tariffs and sanctions, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has refused to halt his attacks and has even raised the threat of nuclear weapons in response.
On August 1 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to specific locations in response to provocative remarks made by Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council. President Trump warned on his Truth Social account, "Deputy Chairman Medvedev's remarks go beyond mere threats and contain real dangers," and added, "We must prepare for the possibility that words may turn into actions."
Deputy Chairman Medvedev, a close confidant of President Putin, strongly criticized the sanctions against Russia mentioned by President Trump in a post on Telegram the previous day, and referenced the Soviet-era nuclear retaliation system known as 'Dead Hand.' He threatened, "President Trump should remember the destructive power of the legendary Dead Hand." The Dead Hand is a retaliatory system designed to automatically launch nuclear missiles if the Russian leadership is incapacitated by an attack.
The confrontation between the two countries, with both sides mentioning the possibility of nuclear weapon use, was triggered by President Trump's pressure to end the war failing to move Russia. On July 14, President Trump demanded that Russia end the war within 50 days, and then, criticizing Russia’s uncooperative stance, moved the deadline forward to August 8. He also proposed imposing secondary tariffs on countries indirectly supporting Russia by importing Russian oil, while expanding military aid to Ukraine.
However, President Putin has continued his offensive, carrying out large-scale bombings on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv day after day. Over the past two days, at least 31 people have been killed and more than 150 injured in the bombings.
President Trump pointed out, "Russia has already lost 112,500 troops this year, and Ukraine has lost about 8,000 soldiers," repeatedly emphasizing the need to end the war by stating, "There have been far too many unnecessary sacrifices."
