Calls for Prompt Countermeasures
On August 1, Jeon Seungil, Chairman of the Gwangju Seo-gu Council, personally visited and inspected an unattended sinkhole site that poses a threat to the safety of local residents, strongly urging for prompt action and fundamental countermeasures.

On this day, Chairman Jeon personally examined the sinkhole that had formed on the road at the construction site of the new public complex in Nongseong 2-dong, Seo-gu, and met with nearby residents to listen to their accounts of the situation.
Chairman Jeon emphasized, "A sinkhole is a very dangerous precursor to structural collapse that can easily lead to casualties," adding, "Swift administrative response is not a choice but an obligation when it comes to protecting the lives and property of residents."
He further pointed out, "Through this inspection, we must go beyond simply restoring the site and instead analyze the fundamental causes of the sinkhole. A comprehensive survey of underground facilities and a plan to improve related infrastructure must be carried out in parallel to prevent recurrence."
Chairman Jeon also stated, "The true role of a local council is not only to address visible dangers but to first identify and prevent hidden risks," adding, "I will continue to be active on the ground to improve the quality of life for Seo-gu residents and to create a safer living environment."
Meanwhile, the Seo-gu Council plans to strengthen ongoing site visits and inspections to eliminate potential hazards in the region in advance and to alleviate residents' concerns.
