The city of Gwangju announced on August 1 that, together with Jeollanam-do Province, Hwasun County, and Damyang County, it has successfully completed the on-site inspection for the second revalidation of the Mudeungsan UNESCO Global Geopark.
This inspection, which took place from July 28 to July 31, follows the park's initial certification in 2018 and its first revalidation in 2023, marking the second attempt at revalidation. The inspection team consisted of UNESCO Global Geopark experts from Japan and China, who meticulously reviewed the core geological sites of Mudeungsan. In particular, they visited specific locations such as Unjusa, Seoyuri Dinosaur Fossil Site, Jangbuljae, and Ipseokdae to verify detailed aspects.
The aspects that received particular attention during the on-site inspection included the deployment of professional interpreters, the preservation status of geological sites, and the operation of the Geovillage program in Pyeongchon Village. The inspection team responded positively to these elements.
The revalidation assessment covered a range of areas, including educational and tourism programs, cooperation with local residents, and efforts to preserve geological sites. The final result will be announced in April next year, following a review by the Global Geoparks Network Council in December this year.
Jung Hyunyun, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau, stated, "We will do our utmost to ensure that the Mudeungsan UNESCO Global Geopark meets UNESCO standards and becomes a model case for sustainable development goals and regional economic growth."
