Attracting Global Attention in the GIS Industry
Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Donghwan) announced on August 1 that it has received the prestigious SAG (Special Achievement in GIS) Award at the 2025 Esri User Conference, hosted by Esri, the world's largest geospatial information company based in the United States.
The SAG Award is a distinguished honor presented to organizations worldwide that have achieved innovative results in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Goyang Special City is drawing particular attention as it is the only recipient from Korea.
In 2024, as part of its digital transformation to realize a smart city, the city established a high-precision digital map covering the entire urban area and built an integrated spatial information management platform based on this map. This platform not only enables the management and analysis of various types of spatial data, but also supports interdepartmental collaboration, thereby enhancing the efficiency of policy development and administrative decision-making.
In particular, the city received high praise for advancing GIS-based services in multiple areas, including urban simulation, management of national and public land, and the citizen homepage, all based on a 3D high-precision digital map. These efforts have established a smart urban management system and realized citizen-centered administration.
A city official stated, "This award is the result of effectively integrating high-precision spatial information throughout municipal administration," and added, "We will continue to create changes that citizens can truly feel through data-driven smart administrative services."
