Pilot Project Launched in 14 Rooms at 7 Funeral Halls
On August 1, the city of Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi Province announced that it will launch a pilot project to reduce the use of disposable containers by introducing stainless steel reusable containers at seven funeral halls within its jurisdiction.
This pilot project will cover 14 out of 46 rooms at the seven funeral halls. Bereaved families who wish to participate will be provided with stainless steel tableware free of charge.

The city explained that stainless steel reusable containers are highly hygienic and durable, and can be reused, making them suitable for establishing an eco-friendly funeral culture. Through this pilot project, the city expects not only to reduce waste generation and save on disposal costs, but also to achieve positive economic and social effects by reducing carbon emissions.
According to the Ministry of Environment, it is estimated that more than 370 million pieces of disposable waste are generated annually at approximately 1,100 funeral halls nationwide, with a total weight reaching 2,300 tons.
A city official stated, "We plan to gradually expand the scope of this initiative so that all funeral halls within our jurisdiction can participate in creating an eco-friendly funeral culture."
