Jeon Hakyu and Jeong Jongbeom to Be Summoned as Witnesses on August 5
The special prosecutor team led by Lee Myunghyun, which is investigating the death of Marine Corps Corporal Chae, announced on August 1 that it has secured the actual classified phone used at the time by First Lady Kim Keonhee, who is implicated in the alleged lobbying for rescue efforts.
Special Prosecutor Jeong Minyoung stated at a regular briefing that day, "We secured both the physical classified phone and the communication records used by Mrs. Kim, spouse of former President Yoon Sukyeol, from the Presidential Security Service yesterday," adding, "The seized classified phone and communication records were submitted voluntarily in accordance with the execution of a warrant, and will also be provided to the Kim Keonhee special prosecutor team."
Special Prosecutor Jeong said, "We expect to be able to confirm in detail by next week what kind of classified phone Mrs. Kim used and how many devices there were."
The special prosecutor team has obtained search and seizure warrants for the classified phone communication records of more than 20 individuals, including Mrs. Kim and former President Yoon, as part of investigations into obstruction of the Chae case and lobbying allegations. They are sequentially securing these records from the Presidential Security Service, the Armed Forces Command and Control Communication Command, and other agencies.
The special prosecutor team plans to receive the classified phone call records of former President Yoon, former Defense Minister Lee Jongseop, and former National Intelligence Service Director Cho Taeyong from the Presidential Security Service early next week.
Meanwhile, the special prosecutor team announced that it will summon Jeon Hakyu, spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defense, and Jeong Jongbeom, former deputy commander of the Marine Corps, as witnesses for questioning at 10 a.m. on August 5.
