On-site Inspection to Prevent Heatwave Damage
for Seniors and Transportation-Vulnerable Groups
Baek Seonghyeon, the mayor of Nonsan City in South Chungcheong Province, recently inspected bus stops to protect the health and safety of citizens amid the ongoing heatwave.
He is especially focusing on addressing the issue of heat exposure at bus stops frequently used by seniors and those with limited mobility, personally checking the conditions and working to develop improvement measures.
According to the city on August 1, Mayor Baek and relevant department staff thoroughly checked the locations of bus stops, the presence of shade structures, and the perceived temperature in waiting areas on July 31, aiming to alleviate citizens' discomfort.
On that day, a senior citizen expressed concern, saying, "The sunlight pours in directly, and there is nowhere to escape the heat."
In response, the city is reviewing various improvement measures, including the installation of cooling shelters and the relocation of bus stops.
Mayor Baek stated, "Protecting the health of seniors and those vulnerable to heatwaves is our top priority," and added, "We will continue proactive, field-oriented measures such as relocating bus stops exposed to heat so that citizens can use public transportation safely and comfortably."
Meanwhile, starting with this inspection, the city plans to implement a variety of measures to eliminate blind spots during heatwaves and further strengthen citizen safety.
