On July 31 (local time), the White House announced that it will begin construction in September of a large-scale banquet hall (State Ballroom) with a capacity for 650 people and a size of 90,000 square feet (approximately 8,361 square meters) at the White House.
Caroline Leavitt, the White House spokesperson, stated during a briefing that day, "Currently, the White House must set up a tent about 100 yards (approximately 92 meters) from the main entrance in order to host large-scale events welcoming major national leaders."
Leavitt explained that, for this purpose, President Trump has held several meetings over the past few weeks and has completed the selection of architectural firms and other related parties.
She stated that the large banquet hall will be constructed in the location of the 'East Wing,' which houses the White House visitor entrance and the First Lady's office, and that it will be separate from the main building. She added that offices currently in the East Wing will need to be relocated during the construction period.
Leavitt said, "Construction is expected to be completed before the end of President Trump's term," and added, "President Trump and other donors are expected to contribute funds for the $200 million (approximately 278.9 billion won) construction project."
In this regard, President Trump stated at an executive order signing ceremony held at the White House that day, "No government funds will ever be used," emphasizing that he and other private donors will pay for the cost of renovating the banquet hall.
