President Zelensky: "Powerless Peace Is Impossible"

Despite pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to agree to a ceasefire within ten days, Russia instead launched a large-scale airstrike on Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on the 31st (local time), according to reports from the Associated Press and others.

According to Kyiv authorities, Russia attacked Kyiv with missiles and drones on this day, killing at least six people, including one child, and injuring 52 others. Tymur Tkachchenko, head of the Kyiv Military Administration, stated that the overnight Russian attacks damaged 27 areas across four districts in Kyiv and warned that the number of casualties could rise. He added that part of a nine-story apartment building in Kyiv collapsed due to the attack, and multiple fires broke out throughout the city.

Rescue authorities said that rescue operations were underway in the morning, but there was still a high possibility that up to ten people remained trapped under the rubble of the destroyed building.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also posted photos of homes left in ruins and still burning after the Russian attack, saying that people remained trapped under the debris. He wrote on social media, "Today, the world once again witnessed Russia's response to the peace shared by us, the United States, and Europe," and added, "This new 'wartime killing' proves that powerless peace is impossible."

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also posted photos of the hit apartment building, stating, "Russia's brutal attack destroyed entire residential buildings and damaged schools and hospitals."

This large-scale Russian airstrike drew attention as it came after President Trump warned Russia on the 29th, "If you do not agree to a ceasefire within ten days starting today, new tariff sanctions will be imposed." On the 14th, President Trump had set a deadline, stating he would impose harsh tariffs on Russia and its trading partners if the war did not end within 50 days, but on the 28th, he abruptly shortened the deadline to "10 to 12 days."

Russia also carried out an airstrike on a Ukrainian military training center on the 30th, the day after President Trump's ten-day warning, resulting in at least three deaths.
