Another Record-Breaking Tropical Night on July 31
Temperatures Expected to Gradually Drop as Clouds Move In
Weekend Forecast: 1 to 2 Degrees Cooler
On the first day of August, daytime temperatures are expected to rise to a high of 36 degrees Celsius, and most regions will experience apparent temperatures around 35 degrees, continuing the intense heat.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on July 31, the morning low temperatures across the country on August 1 are expected to range from 23 to 27 degrees, and daytime highs will range from 30 to 36 degrees.

In Seoul, the morning low is forecast to be 27 degrees, and the daytime high is expected to reach 36 degrees. If the forecast holds, the night between July 31 and August 1 in Seoul will also be recorded as a tropical night (when the nighttime low does not fall below 25 degrees). This will increase the number of tropical nights in Seoul in July to 23 days, once again breaking the record for the highest number of tropical nights in July.
The expected low and high temperatures in other major cities are: Incheon, 26 and 34 degrees; Daejeon, 25 and 36 degrees; Gwangju, 26 and 35 degrees; Daegu, 24 and 36 degrees; Ulsan, 25 and 32 degrees; and Busan, 26 and 32 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to gradually decrease. This is because clouds will flow in at high altitudes along the edge of the North Pacific High, providing some shade from the sun. On August 1, skies across the country are also expected to be partly cloudy at times.
Currently, Typhoon Krosa, the ninth typhoon of the season, is moving northeast over the sea south-southeast of Tokyo, Japan. As it opens a path, the high-pressure system covering Korea is also expected to move northeast and exit around August 4, which raises expectations for a drop in temperature.
Looking at the weekend temperatures: on Saturday, August 2, morning lows and daytime highs are expected to be 21 to 27 degrees and 28 to 36 degrees, respectively. On August 3, they are expected to be 23 to 27 degrees and 31 to 35 degrees. On August 4, the morning low will be 23 to 27 degrees, and the daytime high will be 30 to 35 degrees.
However, as hot and humid air continues to flow in from the south, even if the temperature drops slightly, the apparent temperature will remain high. As hot water vapor moves in, rain is expected to fall mainly in Jeju, the western part of South Chungcheong, and the western part of Honam. In Jeju, rain is expected from the night of August 3 through August 4. On the morning of August 4, rain will begin on the west coast of South Chungcheong and the western part of Jeolla, and by the afternoon, rain will spread to other areas of Chungcheong and Honam, as well as various parts of the Seoul metropolitan area.
For the time being, strong swells will continue to affect the west and south coasts, as well as the coast of Jeju. High waves may crash over rocks, breakwaters, and coastal roads. In the outer seas off the southern part of the West Sea and the southern part of Jeju, strong winds of 30 to 60 km/h (9 to 16 m/s) and high waves of 1.5 to 4.0 meters are expected until the morning of August 1.
