As of July 30, the number of heat-related illness cases nationwide has approached 2,800, with 31% of these cases occurring at outdoor work sites. This situation poses a serious threat to the safety of construction site workers.
This inspection targeted large-scale construction sites, including the Sasong Complex Community, the Yangsan Line Vehicle Depot, and the Ship Hybrid Propulsion Demonstration Center construction sites.
Mayor Na emphasized that the continued heat wave raises particular concerns for the health of construction workers, explaining the background of the inspection by stating, "The safety of citizens takes priority over my personal schedule."
At each site, Mayor Na meticulously checked the following: the status of dedicated rest areas for workers, the installation of cooling facilities and shade structures, the system for supplying adequate water and electrolytes, the adjustment of work hours and provision of rest, and the establishment of emergency response systems.
In particular, Mayor Na spoke directly with on-site workers to listen to the difficulties of working under extreme heat, and repeatedly urged employers and safety managers to strictly comply with safety rules that are directly linked to the preservation of life.
Mayor Na Dongyeon stated, "The recent record-breaking heat wave has led to a sharp increase in heat-related illnesses nationwide, which is a very concerning situation." He emphasized, "At construction sites, please thoroughly follow the five basic rules for preventing heat-related illnesses?providing cool water, wind and shade, rest, cold storage equipment, and emergency measures?to prioritize and protect the lives and safety of workers above all else."
He added, "To ensure that not a single case of heat-related illness occurs, both employers and workers must remain vigilant and practice all safety rules. The city will also make every effort to protect the safety of citizens and workers through various measures, including expanding heat mitigation facilities, increasing the operation of water-spraying vehicles, and running cooling shelters."
