Unusual Purchase of Alcohol and Charcoal Briquettes
"Appeared Lethargic and Unstable... Reported to Police"
An employee at a convenience store in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, rescued a regular customer thanks to keen observation skills.
According to Jeonju City on July 31, in the early morning hours of July 24, a customer identified as A entered a convenience store in Wansan-gu, Jeonju. A, a regular customer, purchased alcohol, which was unusual for them. A also asked the employee if it was possible to buy charcoal briquettes.
A appeared noticeably less energetic and seemed somewhat unstable compared to usual, which made the employee sense that something was wrong. The employee thought that a crisis situation could occur.
After A left the store, the employee, after much deliberation, decided to report the situation to the police. The police, upon receiving the report, met with A and, after persuading them, arranged for A to return home safely.
The convenience store is a participating business in the Life Respect Safe Village program operated by the Jeonju City Mental Health Welfare Center and has been actively promoting a culture of respect for life.
The store owner stated that A visits the store several times a day and added, "The employee paid closer attention because A had been acting differently over the past few days. I am grateful to the employee for not hesitating to report at such a critical moment."
A representative from the city’s Mental Health Welfare Center said this case demonstrates how important it is for citizens to quickly recognize warning signs and take action. "It may have seemed like a minor abnormal behavior that could have been overlooked, but thanks to attention and response, a life was saved," the representative said.
