Gyeonggi Yangpyeong County (Governor Jeon Jinseon) announced on July 31 that, in response to the ongoing heatwave and the increasingly serious issue of rising urban temperatures, it has decided to expand its existing road watering operations to mitigate the 'urban heat island phenomenon,' which poses a threat to the health and safety of county residents.

This measure involves significantly increasing both the range and frequency of road watering in response to the prolonged heatwave. The main principle is to focus these efforts particularly during periods of intense sunlight and in areas most severely affected by the heat island phenomenon.

Spraying water onto road surfaces helps absorb heat and lower the temperature of the roads, and is expected to contribute to reducing the temperature of the surrounding air as well. In addition to alleviating the urban heat island phenomenon, road watering plays an important role in helping residents live in a more pleasant environment.

Yangpyeong County plans to adjust the timing and frequency of road watering to minimize traffic inconvenience and will operate the program systematically to avoid disrupting traffic flow.

Governor Jeon Jinseon stated, "Mitigating the urban heat island phenomenon is a very important task for protecting the safety and health of our residents during this ongoing heatwave," and added, "We will continue to do our utmost to ensure that residents can live in a comfortable and safe environment."

Meanwhile, Yangpyeong County is also implementing various policies to protect the safety and health of residents beyond road watering, including operating cooling shelters, smart shade structures, and smart bus stops; providing cooling supplies to vulnerable groups during heatwaves; and promoting public guidelines for heatwave response. The county urged residents to take special care of their health by staying hydrated, taking adequate breaks, and avoiding outdoor activities during midday heat, and requested strong interest and cooperation in the county’s heatwave response policies.
