Gwangju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on July 31 that it has officially begun implementing the Mokhyeoncheon Ecological Stream Restoration Project, which was selected for a public contest organized by Gyeonggi Province in August 2024. This month, the city completed both the approval of the aquatic ecosystem restoration plan (Han River Basin Environmental Office) and the local finance investment review (Ministry of the Interior and Safety).
According to the recently established aquatic ecosystem restoration plan, the 3.2-kilometer section from the Agricultural Technology Center to the entrance of the Ibaejae Tunnel will be divided into a conservation and water quality purification zone and a waterfront zone. The plan includes the installation of ecological revetments, riffles, and ecological trails, aiming to transform the stream into an ecological waterway where nature and people coexist.
This project, with a total investment of 45 billion won (22.5 billion won from the provincial government, 15.7 billion won from the watershed fund, and 6.8 billion won from the city), is scheduled to begin basic and detailed design services in September. The city aims to complete land compensation by the end of 2026 and finish construction by the end of 2028.
The city expects that this restoration project will help restore the health of the aquatic ecosystem and provide citizens with a pleasant resting space, thereby enhancing the value of the region's ecological assets.
Mayor Bang Sehwan stated, "We will carefully implement the project from the design stage so that Mokhyeoncheon can be reborn as an ecological stream where nature and people coexist," and added, "We will create tangible results that citizens can truly experience."
