Police Conduct Joint Crackdown on Highway Bus-Only Lane Violations... Enforcement to Continue Through Year-End

The National Police Agency announced on July 31 that it had conducted a joint crackdown on violations of highway bus-only lanes in cooperation with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency.

Currently, the highway bus-only lane operates from Yangjae Interchange to Anseong Interchange (58.1 km) on weekdays, and from Yangjae Interchange to Sintanjin Interchange (134.1 km) on Saturdays and public holidays.

The bus-only lane installed within Seoul (from the southern end of Hannam Bridge to Yangjae Interchange) is not a highway but a road exclusively for motor vehicles. However, it is managed in the same way as the highway bus-only lane.

Bus-only lanes may only be used by passenger cars and vans with nine or more seats (or, for passenger cars and vans with 12 or fewer seats, only if six or more people are on board). Violators face a fine of 60,000 won for passenger cars and 70,000 won for vans, along with 30 demerit points.

This joint crackdown involved 27 traffic police officers from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency, as well as the concentrated deployment of 16 undercover and regular patrol cars and other enforcement equipment.

A representative from the National Police Agency stated, "We will continue to enforce regulations against highway bus-only lane violations until the end of the year in order to eliminate the culture of traffic law violations and to create a safer highway environment."
