Gwangmyeong City Seeks Citizens to Cultivate Anyangcheon Garden Themselves

Recruitment for First Group of Citizen Participation Gardeners Open Until August 18
Three Team Types: Quasi-Expert, General Citizen, and Family

Gwangmyeong City in Gyeonggi Province is recruiting citizens to directly cultivate the Anyangcheon Garden.

On July 31, Gwangmyeong City announced that it will be accepting applications for the first group of participants in the "Anyangcheon Local Garden Citizen Participation Garden" from August 1 to August 18.

Gwangmyeong City Seeks Citizens to Cultivate Anyangcheon Garden Themselves

This project is a "sustainable garden project" in which citizens take the lead in planning and creating gardens, and then autonomously maintain them for three years. It is part of the city's "Garden City Gwangmyeong" policy, which aims to spread a garden culture in daily life and create a city where urban and natural environments coexist.

Participants will be recruited in teams of three to five people. There are three types of teams: the "quasi-expert type," in which all members have completed the citizen gardener course; the "general citizen type," open to any adult; and the "family type," for groups with children of elementary school age or older.

A total of 30 teams will be recruited. If the number of applications exceeds the available gardens, selection will be made by automatic lottery. Selected teams will receive theoretical education and field training, after which each team will directly create a garden on land near Haetmuri Square along Anyangcheon. Each team will continue to autonomously tend their garden according to the seasons for three years.

The city will provide each team with garden materials and plants, as well as various benefits such as points for the "Climate Militia Carbon Bankbook" carbon neutrality initiative and recognition of volunteer hours.

Anyone who is a Gwangmyeong citizen or works at a company located in Gwangmyeong can apply through the online application link. For more details, applicants can check the announcements on the Gwangmyeong City Hall website or contact the Garden City Division at City Hall.

Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "This project marks the starting point for realizing 'Garden City Gwangmyeong,' where the city and nature are in harmony," and added, "We hope that the garden culture will naturally spread through this project."

Previously, last month, Gwangmyeong City declared its vision of "A Place Where Life Becomes Art, Garden City Gwangmyeong" and officially launched projects to realize a citizen-participatory garden city.

In particular, Gwangmyeong City is jointly promoting a project with Anyang, Gunpo, and Uiwang?cities in the Anyangcheon basin?to create Anyangcheon as a local garden. These local governments are also planning to register it as a national garden.
