Radio Management Must Evolve with AI Device Growth... Ministry of Science and ICT Presents Future Strategy at APEC Workshop

As artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues to spread, it has been suggested that institutional measures are essential for the efficient management and safe use of radio resources in order for radio policy to evolve in tandem. On July 31, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it held a workshop titled "The Future of Radio Policy with AI" at Songdo Convensia in Incheon as part of "APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Digital Week," where it shared South Korea's radio policy and institutional improvement cases.

The event was attended by representatives from APEC member countries, including the United States, Japan, and China. They discussed ways to enhance global cooperation, focusing on new technologies such as satellite communications and wireless charging, as well as radio safety management policies.

In his keynote speech, Seoul National University Professor Emeritus Nam Sangwook emphasized, "As the scope of radio utilization is expanding explosively, it is crucial to actively adopt AI technology and pursue institutional improvements in parallel."

The workshop was divided into two sessions: "Radio Innovation for Digital Industry Vitalization" and "Establishing a Safe Radio Environment in the Digital Era."

In the first session, the Ministry of Science and ICT introduced its ongoing plans to develop a low Earth orbit satellite communication system. The government aims to foster satellite communications as next-generation communication infrastructure and expand technological and supply chain cooperation with APEC countries. Cases of institutional improvements for the wireless charging industry, plans for building testing and facility infrastructure, and examples of Ieum 5G services in industrial settings were also shared.

The second session covered policies for the safe and efficient use of radio, including plans to establish an AI-based system for monitoring uncertified equipment and the development of 5G electromagnetic wave prediction technology. Joint research results with countries around the world were also presented.

Kim Kyungwoo, Director of Radio Policy Planning at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, "As ICT devices integrated with AI become more widespread and communication technologies advance, the importance of radio will only continue to grow. We will promote policies to ensure that radio, a core national resource in the AI-driven digital era, is managed and operated efficiently to actively support the advancement of ICT technology and industrial revitalization."
