Tsunami Warning Lifted After 11 Hours
The tsunami warning that had been issued for the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East following a magnitude 8.8 earthquake was lifted after approximately 11 hours.
According to TASS News Agency on July 30 (local time), Sergei Lebedev, Minister of Emergency Situations for Kamchatka, announced on Telegram that the tsunami warning had been lifted that afternoon. He added, "This does not mean you should go to the sea to watch the tsunami. Safety measures remain in effect."
On the Kamchatka Peninsula, at around 11:24 a.m. local time, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck in the sea approximately 60 kilometers east of the coastline. This earthquake was the strongest since the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the sixth most powerful earthquake since the 20th century.
As a result of this earthquake, tsunami warnings and evacuation orders were issued not only for the Russian Far East but also for the Pacific region, including Japan, Hawaii, and Ecuador.
