On July 30, Jeollanam-do held the 2025 Jeonnam Top 10 High-Quality Brand Rice Awards Ceremony at the Wangin Room in the provincial government building, aiming to strengthen not only the Korean dining table but also tables worldwide.
Over 100 people attended the ceremony, including Kim Yungrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, Lee Kwangil, Vice Chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, Kim Seongmo, Deputy Head of the Jeonnam Branch of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, as well as officials from cities, counties, and the Agricultural Cooperative.
The event featured a variety of programs, such as promotional videos for each high-quality rice-producing Agricultural Cooperative RPC brand, each with its own unique theme, and a performance under the theme "OK! Now Jeonnam Rice to the World!" The ceremony served as an opportunity to promote the excellence of Jeonnam rice and to boost the pride of farmers and stakeholders who have contributed to the production of high-quality branded rice.
This year's Jeonnam Top 10 High-Quality Brand Rice awards went to: ▲ Grand Prize: Ttangkkeut Haetsal (Haenam) ▲ Excellence Award: Armi Rice (Jangheung) ▲ Merit Award: Dalmaji Rice (Yeongam), Sakaejeol Isaneunjip (Yeonggwang), Wanggeoni Tamnaen Rice (Naju) ▲ Encouragement Award: Hwangtorang Rice (Muan), Nanwoori (Suncheon), Premium Hopyeong (Gangjin), Ureong Saeksimi (Hampyeong), and Bobaejinmi Rice (Jindo).
Ttangkkeut Haetsal from Okcheon Agricultural Cooperative in Haenam is made from the domestic Saecheongmu variety, known for its sticky and glossy texture. It uses low-protein, fully milled rice, and is processed at an RPC facility equipped to meet GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) standards.
In March of this year, Ttangkkeut Haetsal made its first entry into the Japanese market, achieving the remarkable feat of selling out all 2 tons, once again proving the potential of Korean rice in the global market.
The "Jeonnam Top 10 High-Quality Brand Rice" initiative has been in place since 2003 to maintain the quality of Jeonnam rice and enhance brand value. Through rigorous quality management, trustworthy rice brands are selected for consumers.
The evaluation process for the Top 10 High-Quality Brand Rice involves blind reviews by experts from six specialized institutions, including the National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service, Korea Food Research Institute, Agricultural Research and Extension Services, and the Institute of Health and Environment. Criteria include varietal purity, appearance and quality, safety, and sensory evaluation.
Jeollanam-do plans to provide a total of 150 million KRW in project funding as incentives to the ten selected brands, with the amount varying according to their performance, to support quality improvement, promotion and marketing, and sales enhancement.
At the ceremony, Governor Kim Yungrok stated, "We will continue to strengthen the production and distribution infrastructure, including the modernization of RPC facilities and securing distribution channels, so that Jeonnam rice is recognized everywhere for its best taste and quality." He added, "We will actively provide administrative support to enhance brand competitiveness and diversify export markets, so that Jeonnam rice can establish itself as a premium product not only in Korea but also in overseas markets such as Japan, the United States, and Southeast Asia."
