The special prosecutor's team investigating the death of Sergeant Chae (led by Lee Myunghyun) has begun efforts to obtain the encrypted phone communication records used by former President Yoon Sukyeol and Kim Keonhee. The team plans to focus on analyzing the usage records of these encrypted phones around July to August 2023, when allegations of external pressure on the investigation into Sergeant Chae's case surfaced.
Special Prosecutor Jeong Minyoung stated at a regular briefing on the 30th, "Last week, we executed a search and seizure warrant for the encrypted phone communication records of officials from the Presidential Office and military personnel at the Ministry of National Defense."
Jeong continued, "We plan to receive the encrypted phone communication records of 21 key individuals, including former President Yoon, Kim Keonhee, former National Security Advisor Cho Taeyong, former Defense Minister Lee Jongseop, and former Division Commander Lim Seonggeun, from the Army Command and Control Communications Command and the Presidential Security Service. We will proceed with the investigation by analyzing the encrypted phone communication records from the period when external pressure on the investigation is suspected."
When asked whether Kim Keonhee also used an encrypted phone, Jeong replied, "In addition to the individuals I just mentioned, we executed search and seizure warrants for the communication records of several others who are believed to have used encrypted phones. We have determined that Kim Keonhee also used an encrypted phone, and it appears that one was issued to her."
The special prosecutor's team plans to receive all encrypted phone records as early as this week and begin their analysis.
Meanwhile, the team plans to summon former National Security Advisor Cho Taeyong, who was questioned the previous day, for further investigation. Jeong stated, "Additional confirmation is needed regarding parts of his recollection of the National Security Office meeting on July 31 that are not entirely accurate. Former Advisor Cho has also expressed his willingness to cooperate with the additional investigation."
