On July 30, HD Hyundai announced that it had recently signed a 'strategic business agreement for the joint development of AI-based autonomous and eco-friendly ship technology' among four companies: HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, HD Hyundai Marine Solution, Avikus, and H-Line Shipping, at the HD Hyundai Global Research & Development (R&D) Center located in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.

The event was attended by Jang Gwangpil, Head of Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering; Seo Hodong, Chief Operating Officer (Vice President) of H-Line Shipping; Choi Bongjun, Executive Director of HD Hyundai Marine Solution; and Lim Dohyung, CEO of Avikus.

This agreement was promoted in order to maximize the efficiency of ship and fleet operations in a situation where AI technology is rapidly expanding and being applied across all aspects of ship operation, including autonomous navigation, engine automation, optimal route implementation, and maximizing cargo transport efficiency.

According to the agreement, HD Hyundai and H-Line Shipping will jointly develop AI solutions that minimize fuel consumption, maximize ship operation efficiency, and enhance safety.

The actual integration and application of the technology will be handled by HD Hyundai. The approach involves combining Avikus's autonomous navigation solution 'HiNAS' and HD Hyundai Marine Solution's route optimization solution 'OceanWise' with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering's AI cargo operation system 'AI-CHS'. H-Line Shipping will provide a liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier necessary for technology demonstration.

HD Hyundai and H-Line Shipping plan to preemptively develop AI-based solutions that minimize costs required throughout the entire ship lifecycle, from design, construction, operation to maintenance, and proactively respond to the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s tightening environmental regulations, thereby securing a leading position in the market.

Jang Gwangpil, Head of Future Technology Research Institute, said, "This collaboration marks the starting point of AI-based digital innovation that transcends the boundaries between shipbuilding and shipping," and added, "It will serve as an important milestone in setting the standard for eco-friendly future ships."
