Hwang Sunwoo Finishes Fourth in World Championships 200m Freestyle, Misses Back-to-Back Titles

Hwang Sunwoo (Gangwon Provincial Office) finished fourth at the World Aquatics Championships. He aimed to become the first Korean swimmer to win back-to-back titles at the event, but was unsuccessful.

On July 29, at the arena of the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, Hwang Sunwoo finished fourth in the men's 200m freestyle final on the third day of the swimming events at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, recording a time of 1:44.72.


David Popovici (Romania), the gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics, won the gold medal with a time of 1:43.53. Luke Hobson (United States), who was the overall leader in the semifinals and the bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics, won the silver with a time of 1:43.84, while Murasawa Tatsuya (Japan), born in 2007, took the bronze with a time of 1:44.54.


Hwang Sunwoo previously won a silver medal in the 200m freestyle at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, a bronze medal at the 2023 Championships in Fukuoka, Japan, and a gold medal at last year's championships in Doha.


Hwang Sunwoo was the first Korean swimmer to win a gold medal in the 200m freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships and the first to win medals in three consecutive championships in this event.
