Medvedev, Putin's Closest Ally, Says "Trump Is Playing an Ultimatum Game with Russia"

As President Donald Trump of the United States pressured Russia for a ceasefire by announcing that he would shorten the grace period for high-intensity tariffs, a senior Russian official pushed back, claiming that Trump was leading the United States into war.

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, stated on the social networking service X (formerly Twitter), "Trump is playing an ultimatum game with Russia."

Deputy Chairman Medvedev said, "Whether it is 50 days or 10 days, he must remember two things. First, Russia is neither Israel nor Iran. Second, each new ultimatum is a threat and a step toward war."

He added, "This is not a war between Russia and Ukraine, but a war with his own country (the United States). Do not act like 'Sleepy Joe' (a mocking reference to former U.S. President Joe Biden)."

President Trump, during a meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom in Turnberry, Scotland, expressed deep disappointment with President Vladimir Putin of Russia and announced that the grace period for new tariff sanctions against Russia would be reduced from the existing 50 days to 10 to 12 days from today.

Deputy Chairman Medvedev, who served as President of Russia from 2008 to 2012, is known as one of President Putin's closest associates. As of now, the Kremlin and the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not issued any official response to President Trump's remarks.
