Thailand and Cambodia held a summit and agreed to a ceasefire on the 28th (local time), four days after the two countries began armed clashes. The leaders of both countries announced in a joint statement that they had agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, which would take effect from midnight on the same day.
Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Phumtham Wechayachai, and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister's residence in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on the afternoon of the same day and agreed to a ceasefire.
According to Reuters, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who presided over the meeting, said, "Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an unconditional ceasefire," and added, "The ceasefire will begin at midnight today." This meeting was mediated by Prime Minister Anwar of Malaysia, which currently serves as the chair country of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations).
Acting Prime Minister Phumtham and Prime Minister Hun Manet both expressed their welcome for the outcome of the talks. Prime Minister Hun Manet stated, "Today we had a very good meeting and achieved very good results," and added, "I hope that the fighting, which has cost many lives and forced many people to flee, will be stopped immediately." Although Acting Prime Minister Phumtham had questioned Cambodia's sincerity prior to the negotiations, after the meeting, he stated that both sides had agreed to faithfully implement the ceasefire agreement.
This summit was held four days after Thailand and Cambodia engaged in armed conflict at their border on the 24th. The two countries, which have been embroiled in a territorial dispute in the border area, escalated the conflict by deploying fighter jets from the 24th. As a result, 35 people (22 from Thailand and 13 from Cambodia), including civilians and soldiers, were killed, more than 140 were injured, and approximately 260,000 people were displaced.
