Police have launched a full-scale investigation after assigning the case regarding allegations that Lee Junseok, leader of the Reform New Party, had the cost of a public opinion poll paid on his behalf.
According to the police on July 28, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency assigned the case to the Public Crime Investigation Unit around the end of May, after Oh Sangjong, head of the Jayu Daehan Hogukdan, filed a complaint against Lee for alleged violations of the Public Official Election Act and the Political Funds Act. Lee is suspected of having the cost of a public opinion poll paid on his behalf by an aspiring politician surnamed Bae, who was preparing to run for Goryeong County Governor during the 2021 People Power Party leadership race.
The police plan to soon summon Kang Hyekyung, the first whistleblower in the 'Myung Taegyun nomination intervention allegations,' as a reference witness. Kang worked as the deputy director in charge of operations at Mirae Hanguk Research Institute, a public opinion polling company that was effectively run by 'political broker' Myung Taegyun.
