On July 28, Namyangju City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Joo Kwangdeok) announced that it would temporarily suspend the operation of outdoor sports facilities and actively utilize indoor sports spaces in order to protect the health and safety of citizens amid the ongoing heat wave.
This measure was implemented because the perceived temperature has remained above 33 degrees Celsius for more than two consecutive days, and a heat wave advisory has been issued due to high humidity and strong sunlight. In particular, the city prioritized the protection of vulnerable groups such as the elderly and children, and therefore decided to adjust outdoor sports activities.
The operation of outdoor sports facilities will be suspended if the perceived temperature remains above 33 degrees Celsius for more than two days. The suspension period will last from the time the perceived temperature exceeds 33 degrees until it drops below this threshold. However, if the temperature drops in the evening, the facilities may be flexibly reopened. All these measures will remain in effect from July 28 until further notice.
The city is advising users of outdoor sports facilities to: check weather conditions in real time, shorten exercise duration, use sunscreen, drink plenty of water, and utilize rest areas. In addition, the city is conducting pre-inspections of drinking water, shade canopies, and cooling spaces at outdoor facilities, and is continuously monitoring their operational status.
Mayor Joo Kwangdeok of Namyangju City stated, "During the summer, when the heat wave continues, it is necessary to adjust sports activities with the health of citizens as the top priority," and added, "We will continue to do our best to inspect sports environments and provide guidance so that everyone can exercise safely."
