The Office of the President announced that it is preparing a special pardon for the public welfare to mark Liberation Day on August 15 next month. However, it clarified that pardons for politicians, such as Cho Kuk, former leader of the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, which have been raised in political circles, are not being considered.
Woo Sangho, Senior Presidential Secretary for Political Affairs, held a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the 28th and stated, "We are preparing a special pardon for the public welfare."
Woo also said, "It is true that petitions requesting a pardon for former leader Cho Kuk have been submitted by religious leaders and representatives of civil society from various sectors." However, he emphasized, "The Office of the President is currently focused on customs negotiations, and I want to make it clear that we have not begun considering pardons for politicians."
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Venerable Jinwoo, the Chief Executive Director of the Jogye Order, recently delivered a letter to President Lee requesting a pardon for former leader Cho Kuk. Voices within the ruling party, including Kang Deukgu of the Democratic Party of Korea, are also calling for a pardon for Cho Kuk.
