"Enhancing Driver Visibility to Help Prevent Traffic Accidents"
On July 28, the Gwangju City Government announced that it had completed improvements to 112 locations this year as part of its project to enhance the start and end road markings and yellow crosswalk facilities in school zones, aiming to create a safer commuting environment for children.
This project was initiated following the July 2023 revision of the Enforcement Rules of the Road Traffic Act, which mandated that the start and end points of school zones must be clearly marked with road surface signs. Along with the maintenance of yellow crosswalks, the project aimed to improve driver visibility and contribute to the prevention of traffic accidents involving children.
This year, the city invested a total project budget of 750 million won and completed improvements at 112 out of 514 school zones in the area. Last year, 83 locations were improved. The city plans to continue upgrading the remaining 319 school zones in stages each year.
Kim Youngsun, Director of the Integrated Airport and Transportation Bureau, stated, "We expect that this project will allow children to commute to and from school more safely," adding, "We will continue our efforts to make Gwangju a city where both children and parents can feel at ease."
