Goyang Special City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Donghwan) announced on July 28 that, in response to the ongoing record-breaking heatwave, it will begin full-scale water spraying operations on major urban roads through cooperation between the public sector, private sector, and military to protect citizen safety.

The city plans to deploy water-spraying vehicles intensively on days when the Korea Meteorological Administration issues a heat wave advisory or warning, aiming to lower road surface radiant heat and mitigate the perceived temperature caused by the urban heat island effect.
The water spraying operation will be carried out using a total of 15 water-spraying vehicles, with the city, military, and private sector each responsible for designated road sections. The city will operate water-spraying vehicles by district office, military units will use decontamination vehicles, and private entities will utilize their own water-spraying vehicles.
Additionally, the city has conducted heatwave response training and on-site inspections at local construction sites to prevent heat-related illnesses and safety accidents. It has also directly distributed heatwave response supplies such as neck coolers, sun sticks, towels, and cooling sleeves.
This measure is a preventive response tailored to the characteristics of construction sites, where outdoor work is frequent. It is a proactive step to protect worker health and prevent serious industrial accidents.
Lee Donghwan, Mayor of Goyang Special City, stated, "The ongoing heatwave is now threatening not only the daily lives of citizens but also their safety," and added, "We will make every effort to respond to the heatwave, with the public sector, private sector, and military working together."
