On July 28, police announced that the homemade explosives installed by a man in his 60s, who killed his son with a homemade firearm in Incheon, possessed significant destructive power.
An official from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated at a regular press briefing on the same day, "The timer was operating, and if it had reached the set time, it would have detonated," adding, "The explosion would have caused a large fire due to its substantial power."
Park Hyunsoo, acting chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, said, "A request for cooperation was received from Incheon at 11:00 p.m., and Dobong Police Station confirmed the suspect's residence," adding, "We located the suspect through CCTV footage in Seoul and made an emergency arrest." He continued, "After obtaining a statement regarding the installation of explosives, we conducted an emergency evacuation of 105 people and dispatched the special forces unit," explaining, "We completely removed 14 explosive devices, each containing 2 liters of thinner."
Acting Chief Park commented on the investigation into the police's initial response in Incheon, saying, "My understanding is that an internal audit is currently underway in Incheon," and added, "The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency believes the response was appropriate according to the manual, and no audit is being conducted here."
Previously, on July 20 at approximately 9:31 p.m., Mr. A was charged with shooting and killing his son, Mr. B, a man in his 30s, using a homemade firearm on the 33rd floor of an apartment in Songdo-dong, Yeonsu-gu, Incheon. After fleeing the scene, Mr. A was tracked down and apprehended in Seoul at around 12:20 a.m., then transferred back to Incheon. Multiple explosive devices, including thinner and ignition devices, were discovered at Mr. A's residence.
