Courts Nationwide to Suspend Operations for Two Weeks... Yoon Suk-yeol's Sedition Trial Also Temporarily Halted

Court Recess Until August 8 Next Month
Yoon’s Sedition Trial to Resume on the 11th

Most courts across the country will suspend operations for two weeks during the summer vacation period. Major trials, including the sedition trial of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, will also be paused during this time.

According to the legal community on July 27, courts at all levels nationwide, including the Seoul Central District Court, will enter the summer recess from July 28 to August 8. The Seoul High Court will extend its recess until August 15.

As a result, the sedition trial, which was being held once or twice a week at the Seoul Central District Court, will also be temporarily suspended. The trial of former President Yoon Suk-yeol on charges of leading a sedition will resume on August 11. Trials for police leadership, including Commissioner General Cho Jiho, and former Minister of National Defense Kim Yonghyeon, on sedition charges, will resume on August 13 and 14, respectively.

Previously, Special Prosecutor Cho Eunsuk's team argued that, considering the seriousness of the case, the trial should continue even during the recess. However, former President Yoon Suk-yeol’s defense team rejected this, so no additional trial dates were scheduled.

The first preparatory hearing for the additional charges against former President Yoon Suk-yeol?obstruction of special public duty and abuse of authority?filed by the special prosecutor will be held on August 19, after the recess. Former President Yoon will have to respond to both the ongoing sedition trial and this new case simultaneously.

Except for President Lee Jaemyung, the 'Daejang-dong·Wirye·Seongnam FC·Baekhyeon-dong' trial, which is only proceeding against Jeong Jinsang, former chief of political affairs at the Democratic Party’s representative office, will be held every Tuesday starting August 12, after the recess.

The second preparatory hearing for former President Moon Jae-in’s bribery trial, whose first preparatory hearing was held last month, is scheduled for September 9.

During the recess, most civil, family, and administrative trials, as well as criminal trials for defendants not in custody, will not be held except for urgent or significant cases. However, hearings for applications such as provisional seizures and injunctions, trials for criminal cases involving detained defendants, and substantive warrant reviews will proceed. Court operations such as case filings and assignments will continue as usual.
