Gyeonggi Province Issues Emergency Level 2 Amid Extreme Heatwave... Governor Kim Dongyeon Orders Special Measures to Minimize Damage

Gyeonggi Province raised the emergency level of its Heatwave Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to Level 2 at 3:00 p.m. on July 26, 2025.


In accordance with the escalation to Emergency Level 2, Gyeonggi Province notified all 31 cities and counties within the province of special directives from Governor Kim Dongyeon, emphasizing the prevention of casualties and the minimization of heatwave-related damage.


The main directives include: ▲ Establishing a thorough response system led by deputy heads in each city and county to prevent casualties from heat-related illnesses among residents ▲ Mobilizing all available personnel and resources, including welfare support workers and local autonomous disaster prevention teams, to strengthen on-site monitoring and protection activities for the three major vulnerable groups (outdoor workers, field and farm workers, and vulnerable individuals such as the elderly living alone) ▲ Thorough management of cooling centers ▲ Enhancing public awareness of safety guidelines through disaster safety text messages, village broadcasts, and electronic display boards.

Governor Kim Dongyeon stated, "To prevent casualties among those vulnerable to heatwaves, cities and counties must strengthen their preventive measures. I also urge residents to refrain from outdoor activities and take breaks during the hottest hours of the day (14:00?17:00) in accordance with the national heatwave action guidelines."


Meanwhile, according to statistics from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (as of July 25, 2025), there were 28 new cases of heat-related illnesses in the province (cumulative total: 469 cases). Compared to the same day last year, when there were 20 cases (cumulative total: 170 cases), the number of daily heat-related illness cases increased by 40%, and the cumulative total increased by 176%, indicating a significant rise in casualties.
