Seo-gu District in Gwangju Metropolitan City has produced the first graduates of the "Together Seo-gu Happy School," a program where parents and children grow together. On July 26, Seo-gu held a "Growth Sharing Event" at the Briti Gallery Cafe (440 Daenam-daero) with about 60 families from the first cohort of Happy School, marking the completion of their four-month educational journey.
The "Together Seo-gu Happy School" is an innovative program that breaks away from exam-focused education. It fosters problem-solving skills, communication abilities, and self-directed learning?qualities required by future society?through experiential and hands-on learning activities.
Participants strengthened their understanding of future education trends and enhanced their parental coaching skills through the "Parent Happy School." Through the "Children Happy School," children developed problem-solving skills by engaging in challenging activities in nature. In addition, the "Together Happy School" offered a character coaching program where parents and children participated together, sharing time for communication and empathy.
This sharing event gained added significance as it was planned and participated in directly by the participants themselves. The program included a parent essay reading, a duet performance by a mother and daughter, and a surprise letter reading by a father, creating a stage made by families together.
Participants agreed that the Happy School was more than just an educational program, saying, "It made me see education in a new light," and, "It was a valuable time to reflect on both my child and myself at the same time," emphasizing that it served as a catalyst for positive change within their families.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu, stated, "Happy School is both Seo-gu's challenge for the future of education and proof that parents and children can grow together." He added, "What children need to live in the age of artificial intelligence is a sense of self and the ability to live together, and walking that path together is the true meaning of Happy School."
He further announced, "Seo-gu will continue to build a warm educational city where children and parents can nurture their dreams together through an educational ecosystem that includes families, schools, and the local community."
