Gokseong County in South Jeolla Province (Governor Cho Sangrae) announced on July 26 that it will provide "eco-friendly logging subsidies" to forest owners in accordance with the Act on the Creation and Management of Forest Resources.
The "eco-friendly logging subsidy" is provided when only a portion of the forest is selectively logged, leaving tree belts and clusters of trees, unlike the conventional clear-cutting method. This subsidy is given to forest owners as a portion of the expected revenue from the sale of the remaining standing trees within the logged area.
Eligible recipients are forest owners who leave more than 20% of the total standing timber in clear-cut areas of 5 hectares or more. The subsidy amount is determined based on the standing timber volume per hectare within the forest. This year, Gokseong County's eco-friendly logging project covers 100 hectares. An official from the county stated, "This project provides forestry income to forest owners and also helps prevent forest disasters caused by indiscriminate logging, achieving a dual benefit."
Meanwhile, eco-friendly logging offers various advantages, such as maintaining ecological balance by enhancing biodiversity, responding to climate change, and fostering healthy forests through the sustainable cultivation of forest resources.
