This field learning program was part of the “Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center Operation Project,” supported by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and the Korea Technology and Information Promotion Agency for SMEs. It was conducted in connection with the Smart Factory Academy operated by the Gyeongbuk Center for Creative Economy and Innovation.
Fifteen representatives from SMEs in the Pohang region participated, attending practical programs on topics such as: case studies and strategies for building smart factories; operational know-how and maintenance methods; and layout design and on-site innovation cases. The program also included training on the basic concepts of smart factories and fostering an innovative mindset.
A representative from one of the participating companies shared, “It was a valuable opportunity to experience real-life operational cases through field-based education and to clarify the direction for our company’s smart factory adoption.”
Since 2019, Pohang City and Pohang Technopark have operated the “Pohang Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center,” supporting the establishment of smart factories for 93 small and medium-sized manufacturing companies to date. They have also promoted awareness of digital transformation in the local industry by holding business briefings and professional training sessions in parallel.
As a result of these efforts, Pohang Technopark recently received an A grade, the highest rating, in the national evaluation of smart manufacturing innovation center operations, further solidifying its position as a key institution leading manufacturing innovation in the region.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, “In the face of challenging external economic conditions such as U.S. tariff pressures and manufacturing competition with China, the transition to smart factories is no longer an option but a necessity for small and medium-sized manufacturers. I hope this on-site learning program will motivate companies to pursue digital transformation, and Pohang City will continue to provide unwavering support to companies seeking to establish smart factories.”
