Mother Demands Settlement When Son Gets Hurt

Mother and Son Extort Settlement Money from Taxi Drivers by Faking Serious Injuries from Minor Head Bump A mother and child accused of taxi fraud expressing distress. Ulsan Nambu Police Station

A mother and her son have been apprehended by the police after claiming to have been seriously injured due to reckless driving by a taxi driver, even though the son only lightly bumped his head while riding in the taxi, and extorting settlement money as a result.

On July 24, the Ulsan Nambu Police Station announced that they had referred a woman in her 50s, identified as A, and a man in his 20s, identified as B, to the prosecution without detention on charges of fraud. The mother and son allegedly boarded taxis from June until recently, and after intentionally bumping the son's head hard even with minor shaking, they complained of pain and demanded settlement money from taxi drivers.

Their method mainly involved the son exaggerating his pain, while the mother heightened the situation as if it were a serious matter, in order to obtain settlement money from the taxi drivers. The police believe that, so far, they have extorted a total of 2.6 million won from seven taxi drivers.

The police stated, "We will be conducting a special crackdown on traffic accident insurance fraud until August," and urged, "If you witness any illegal activity, please report it actively."
