"We Will Establish Strong and Continuous Improvement Measures"
After a YouTuber visiting Ulleungdo sparked controversy by mentioning fatty samgyeopsal and high accommodation fees, Nam Hangkwon, Governor of Ulleung County, posted a statement on the county website.
On July 23, Governor Nam stated on the county website, "I would like to express my sincere apologies regarding the overall quality and pricing issues related to tourism services that have recently come to light through online platforms." He added, "We will establish strong and continuous improvement measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur."
The YouTuber recently uploaded a video of their trip to Ulleung, showing a restaurant serving samgyeopsal with about half of it being fat. The price of the samgyeopsal at this restaurant was 15,000 won for 120 grams, which is relatively expensive. In addition, one accommodation charged 90,000 won per night, which is expensive compared to similar-level accommodations in major cities, where the price ranges from 40,000 to 50,000 won. Despite this, the air conditioner did not work, and the owner neither took any action nor offered an apology.
Governor Nam requested the active interest and participation of Ulleung residents so that tourists visiting Ulleungdo can leave with good memories and wish to return. He also asked the public to observe and support Ulleung’s efforts.

The county plans to support the formation of a private-sector tourism service industry council to establish standardized service guidelines, provide county-level guidance in case of problems, and offer benefits to businesses recognized for friendliness and excellence.
