Trump Criticizes CNN as "Fake News"
U.S. President Donald Trump, already facing a political crisis due to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, has found himself in further trouble after photos suggesting a close relationship with Epstein were made public. As evidence hinting at ties between President Trump and Epstein continues to emerge, suspicions surrounding Epstein are spreading even further.
On July 22 (local time), CNN released photos showing Epstein attending President Donald Trump’s 1993 wedding to his second wife, Marla Maples, as a guest.
CNN explained that this situation had not been widely known, and that this is the first time photographic evidence confirming a personal relationship between President Trump and Epstein has been revealed. In these photos, Epstein is seen entering the wedding venue at New York’s Plaza Hotel. In another photo, Epstein is captured smiling among other guests.
Additionally, a photo was released showing President Trump and Epstein laughing and conversing together before the Victoria’s Secret fashion show runway held in New York in 1999.
Regarding the report, President Trump spoke to CNN by phone and denied the 1993 wedding photo, saying, “Are you joking with me right now?” He repeatedly called CNN “fake news” before hanging up the phone.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung criticized CNN, stating, “This is simply a selection of meaningless videos and photos taken out of context,” and added, “It is appalling that they are trying to suggest something nefarious with this.”
Epstein, a billionaire and former hedge fund manager, was arrested on charges of committing sex crimes against numerous women, including dozens of minors. He later died by suicide in jail in 2019.
Even after Epstein’s death, conspiracy theories related to him have continued to emerge. In particular, rumors that President Trump was included on Epstein’s list of clients for sexual services, and debates over the disclosure of past investigation records on Epstein, have caused internal divisions even among President Trump’s hardline supporters.
Amid these developments, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) recently reported that President Trump sent an obscene letter to Epstein. According to the WSJ, on Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003, President Trump sent him a letter featuring a nude female figure drawn by hand and signed by Trump himself. Outraged by this report, President Trump filed a $10 billion (approximately 14 trillion won) defamation lawsuit against the WSJ, seeking damages.
As suspicions surrounding Epstein intensify, there are growing predictions that this issue could impact next year’s midterm elections. The Washington Post (WP) pointed out regarding this case, “If the Epstein controversy continues to draw attention, it could pose an even greater threat to President Trump, whose approval ratings are already on the decline.”
