Two Months After Kumho Tire Fire... Environmental Group Criticizes Evasion of Responsibility and Lack of Information Disclosure

Gwangju Environmental Movement Union: "Ignoring Residents' Suffering Violates Basic Rights"
"Withholding Information on Radiation and Compensation Makes Trust Impossible"

Civic groups have strongly criticized Kumho Tire for failing to demonstrate responsible conduct two months after the fire accident at its Gwangju factory on May 17.

In a statement released on July 23, the Gwangju Environmental Movement Union said, "Although more than 20,000 people have reported health issues and property damage, Kumho Tire has not cooperated with fact-finding investigations or information disclosure. The company must approach residents with genuine sincerity."

According to the group, while compensation procedures have begun for some affected residents, only 35% (7,134 people) of the total applicants (20,199 people) have actually applied for compensation. The group pointed out, "There was only a text message saying, 'If you agree, sign the agreement,' without any explanation of the compensation criteria, and the application process is unfriendly to the elderly and people with limited mobility."

The group also raised concerns that the resident support subcommittee, organized under the jurisdiction of Gwangsan-gu, has effectively been suspended after holding only one meeting. The group argued, "A subcommittee composed solely of victims, Kumho Tire, and the district office cannot sufficiently discuss health impacts and compensation. Legal and health experts must participate."

The Gwangju Environmental Movement Union warned, "If Kumho Tire truly wants to restore trust with the local community, it must stop remaining silent and evading responsibility, and instead provide transparent information, issue an apology, and offer explanations. If the company continues to ignore the health and safety of citizens for the sake of corporate interests, we will be forced to take even stronger action."
