Performances by Salon de Gugak Seonyul Mori, Traditional Musician Kang Nara, and Others
Imsil County in North Jeolla Province will host the 'Traveling Sound Festival' on July 26 at 11:00 AM on a special stage at Imsil Market.
According to the county on July 23, this festival has been organized as a special traditional Korean music performance to promote the Jeonju International Sori Festival, which is the representative traditional music festival of North Jeolla Province.
The festival is hosted by North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province and organized by the Jeonju International Sori Festival Organizing Committee. Kang Nara, a traditional musician from Imsil, and Salon de Gugak Seonyul Mori, a group known for harmoniously blending traditional Korean music with Western melodic instruments, will set the tone for the festival through their performances on the traditional music stage.
The Jeonju International Sori Festival is a global traditional music festival that features outstanding traditional musicians from Korea and abroad every year. This year, under the theme of 'Echoes of the Homeland,' preliminary performances are being held throughout the province ahead of the main event in August. The Imsil performance is particularly meaningful as it is a participatory stage featuring both local artists and residents.
Kang Nara, the traditional singer, planned and performed a solo recital of the pansori concert 'Norum' in 2020 and received the President's Award from the Korean Federation of Arts and Culture Organizations in 2023. She is an artist who is actively performing in Korea and pioneering new horizons in both pansori and creative traditional music.
Kang Nara said, "It is the greatest honor and responsibility as an artist to stand on my hometown stage as the opening of the Jeonju International Sori Festival," and added, "I will present a stage prepared with sincerity, capturing the sentiment of my hometown."
Salon de Gugak Seonyul Mori is a multidisciplinary creative arts group that brings together melodic instruments from traditional Korean music, Western music, and contemporary music, such as gayageum, guitar, and cello. The group reinterprets Korean traditional music from a new perspective, creating works where the beauty of tradition and modern sensibilities coexist.
At this performance, they will present a new fusion traditional music stage that combines the profound charm of Korean traditional music with Western instruments and elements of contemporary music, reinterpreting it with a modern sensibility so that audiences of all generations can enjoy it together.
The Traveling Sound Festival in Imsil is a touring performance designed to spread the excitement of the festival throughout the region. It aims to be an open performance format that is easily accessible to everyone.
Imsil County Governor Sim Min said, "This performance, featuring Kang Nara, a traditional musician from Imsil, and the multidisciplinary creative arts group Salon de Gugak Seonyul Mori, is expected to be a stage that embodies both regional identity and artistic inspiration," adding, "We will continue to provide a variety of opportunities to invigorate cultural and artistic activities in the future."
