Focused Development of High-Performance Nb3Sn Superconducting Wires
for Use in Fusion Reactors and Accelerators
KAT Co., Ltd. (CEO Yoo Sungtaek), which received 100 million KRW in support through Daejeon City's research assistance program, has focused on developing high-specification products compared to existing superconducting wires and achieved a significant milestone by signing an export contract worth 16 million euros (approximately 25.7 billion KRW) with the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) in Italy.
KAT Co., Ltd., a company based in Daejeon, supplied superconducting wires for Italy's nuclear fusion project, marking a successful outcome of Daejeon City's technology development support program.
This achievement goes beyond simple technology development by a single company; it is regarded as a model case in which Daejeon City simultaneously established a fusion industry ecosystem based on public-private cooperation, facilitated local companies' entry into overseas markets, and secured export competitiveness in future core high-tech industries.
The city provided 100 million KRW in municipal funding to support the development of superconducting wire products by KAT Co., Ltd. through the "2024 Energy Fusion Competitiveness Enhancement Support Project."
Yoo Sungtaek, CEO of KAT Co., Ltd., stated, "Winning this order has become an important opportunity to establish our technological capabilities and brand reliability worldwide," adding, "We will continue to work closely with Daejeon City to establish ourselves as a leading company in the field of superconducting wires."
Kwon Kyungmin, Director of Economic Affairs at Daejeon City, commented, "This export contract is a representative example of how the city's research and development support has enhanced corporate technology and competitiveness, leading to tangible results. We will continue our efforts to provide ongoing support so that promising small and medium-sized enterprises in Daejeon, like KAT Co., Ltd., can advance into global markets and achieve technological self-reliance."
Meanwhile, KAT is a global superconducting wire company established in 2004 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Koryo Steel. The company specializes in the development, manufacturing, and supply of high-performance Nb3Sn superconducting wires used in fusion reactors and accelerators.
