Four Missing as Heavy Rain Causes Damage in Gapyeong
Joint Search Operation Conducted, but No Additional Missing Persons Found
Rapid Currents and Communication Failures Hamper Rescue Efforts
As heavy rainfall has caused various types of damage in Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province, search authorities conducted a joint search on July 22 but were unable to locate any additional missing persons.
The search operation, which began at 7 a.m. that day, involved a total of 735 personnel, including 499 police officers, 167 firefighters, and 54 volunteer firefighters. In addition, 83 pieces of equipment were deployed, including vehicles, drones, rescue dogs, buses, boats, and two helicopters.
Based on this, authorities conducted searches focusing on three areas: Daebo-ri in Gapyeong County, where missing persons were first reported; Deokhyeon-ri, which is downstream; and Cheongpyeong Dam. However, no additional missing persons were found. It has been reported that the search is difficult due to the rapid current at the site and, in some affected areas, even communication is not functioning smoothly.
Currently, there are four missing persons in the Gapyeong area. Among a family who went missing after visiting the Mailli campsite, two remain unaccounted for; one person was swept away near a fishing spot by Daebo Bridge; and another is believed to have been swept away by rapid currents along the riverside in Deokhyeon-ri. Their whereabouts are still unknown.
