Song Kiho, Chief of the Presidential Situation Room, has moved to the position of Secretary for Economic Security under the Third Deputy Director of the National Security Office. Kim Jungwoo, former lawmaker of the Democratic Party of Korea, is being strongly considered as Song's successor for the Situation Room Chief position.
On July 22, Kang Yujeong, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, stated, "Chief Song, as an expert in international trade and economics, has been reassigned laterally in light of the importance of the ongoing tariff negotiations with the United States."
The Secretary for Economic Security is a position under the Third Deputy Director Oh Hyunju, overseeing foreign affairs and security matters related to the economy within the National Security Office. Song, an expert in international trade, is expected to leverage his expertise to handle various trade-related tasks, including tariff negotiations with the United States.
Song has long served as the Chair of the International Trade Committee of Minbyun. In last year's 22nd general election, he ran as a candidate for the National Assembly representing Songpa-eul in Seoul but was not elected. However, after the inauguration of the Lee Jaemyung administration last month, he was appointed as Chief of the Situation Room and has been handling related duties for over a month.
