Cut Off Contact and Disappeared Three Months After the Accident,
Sparking Public Outrage in China
A story has emerged that has drawn widespread sympathy: a woman suffered paralysis from the waist down after being involved in a car accident while riding in a vehicle driven by her boyfriend. After the accident, her boyfriend cut off all contact and disappeared.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on July 17 (local time), a woman identified as A traveled to a reservoir in Gansu Province, northwestern China, in April this year with her boyfriend, identified as B, and his family.
The group traveled by car, with boyfriend B driving and A seated in the front passenger seat.
However, while making a right turn, boyfriend B lost focus, causing the vehicle to veer into the oncoming lane, resulting in a head-on collision with an approaching truck. After the initial collision with the truck, the vehicle carrying the group was also struck by a small car coming from behind the truck.
Police determined that B was primarily responsible for the accident because he drove into the oncoming lane, violating traffic laws. Notably, B and his family suffered only minor injuries, while A's injuries were severe. She was diagnosed with paralysis from the waist down due to spinal cord damage and multiple fractures. The couple, who had gotten engaged earlier this year, had planned to marry in 2026.
After the accident, B and his family visited A in the hospital and promised financial support for her treatment and their planned marriage. However, SCMP reported that once A's condition stabilized and she was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital, B and his family's attitude changed. Beginning last month, they reportedly cut off all contact and financial support and disappeared completely.
A is reportedly struggling with the financial burden of her treatment. The initial medical expenses amounted to about 300,000 yuan (approximately 58 million won), and future surgeries are expected to cost an additional 300,000 to 400,000 yuan (58 to 77 million won). In response, A is said to be preparing for legal action.
A local lawyer stated, "B is primarily responsible for the accident and is therefore obligated to pay compensation." SCMP reported that there is widespread public criticism of B online.
