Gwangju City is officially launching its "Citizen Supporters" initiative to ensure the successful hosting of the World Archery Championships scheduled for September. On the 22nd, the city held the "Gwangju 2025 World (Para) Archery Championships Citizen Supporters Launch Ceremony" in the main conference room at city hall, marking the beginning of its support for the event.
Approximately 600 people attended the event, including Mayor Kang Gijeong, City Council Chairperson Shin Sujeong, sports officials, and supporters, raising expectations for the tournament. The launch ceremony included the presentation of appointment certificates, a cheerleading performance, and basic activity training.
A total of 3,296 citizen supporters have been recruited, voluntarily participating in general, cheering, and interpretation roles. During the September championships, they will engage in a variety of activities, including welcoming athletes, cheering at venues, and volunteering.
In particular, the supporters plan to enhance their capabilities through district-by-district training sessions throughout August, and during the main event, they will focus on on-site activities.
Mayor Kang Gijeong emphasized, "The most meaningful aspect is preparing for this archery tournament, which will draw global attention, together with our citizens," adding, "The active involvement of citizen supporters will be an important opportunity to showcase the capabilities of Gwangju's citizens."
Meanwhile, the upcoming tournament will be held from September 2 to 28 at the Gwangju International Archery Center and 5·18 Democracy Square, with approximately 900 athletes from over 90 countries expected to participate. Gwangju City is making thorough preparations to ensure the successful operation of the event in all areas, including citizen participation, transportation, accommodation, and safety.
